If you believe the Assads, then the Syrian people are
terrorists and terrorist wannabes. If you believe some in the opposition, the Syrian
people just want to be left to die in “peace” under the daily hail of sniper
bullets and tanks shells the Assads send their way as they pray to God. But how
about just believe what your eyes and ears are telling you, and follow the
dictates of your reason and conscience? The Syrian people want international protection,
a no-fly zone, a safe haven, and everything that is necessary to help stop the killing
and to help them rid themselves, and the world, of the Assads and their minions.
Wednesday October 19,
2011
Pro-Assad militias
organize another show of sycophancy in Syria, this time in Aleppo, and
again fail to impress, as only 50,000 people turn out, way below the usual
million coward mark.
Meanwhile, the Syrian
National Council announced today the names of some of its key members, but
failed to issue a direct call on the international community to protect
civilian protesters or to endorse the popular demand for a no-fly zone.
And on the forgotten
front, 24 people were killed in security crackdowns and clashes between
loyalists and defectors, including: 6 protesters in the Nazheen Neighborhood
in Homs City, 7 loyalists killed in clashes by defectors that took place
near the town Qseir in the larger Homs Province. Clashes between
loyalists and defectors also took place near the town of Hraak in the
Deraa/Hauran Province in South Syria.

A SNC Update:
The
Syrian National Council announced today
the names of some of its key leaders in the General Secretariat (19 out of 29
names) and the presidential council (5 out of 7 names). Meanwhile, wrangling
over the other names continues. Burhane Ghalioun was elected Council president
for a period of 3 months in accordance with a rotation system, meaning he will
be looking for a new council to lead in 3 months.
But for now, here is the rundown of the names of the members
of the General Secretariat in the order provided on their website, it seems
there was a dispute on the order:

The
more interesting development in this regard, however, is the carefully worded
statement that was issued and the dispute that the revelations started off on
Facebook between SNC members and supporters. It seems the dispute over names is
still ongoing between people who belong to the same current or movement.
Be
that as it may, the statement we have was published by email, on the Damascus
Declaration website as well as on the official website of the SNC. The
important thing to note here is that despite an assertion that the SNC will be
committed to “the demands of the revolutionary movement,” rejecting dialog with
the regime seems to be the only demand that the SNC clearly endorsed, other
demands such as the no-fly zone, the safe haven and the international monitors,
were not mentioned, and there was even no clear demand for protecting
civilians.
Rather,
the statement “stressed the importance of national unity and the continuity of
the revolution, of supporting it by all means while safeguarding its peaceful
nature, and the importance of mobilizing all Arab, regional and international
energies towards isolating and delegitimizing the regime and focusing on the
importance of providing international protection for unarmed civilians.”
This
is a tortured language and does not constitute a clear demand, and it fails to
address the realities on the ground. Coming now and not back in April, this
statement makes absolutely no sense. Attempts
by some Council members to push these limits in their pronouncements to the
press do not compensate for this failure. The cut-off from reality that made
the opposition useless and incapable of inspiring anything but contempt in
pre-revolutionary times is now back in full swing, it seems.
Meanwhile,
the devil and his minions lurk in the forgotten “details,” waiting to be
brought out.
The FBI released today a photo proving that Mohamad
Soueid, the Syrian man accused of spying on us, Syrian dissidents living in the
U.S., did indeed meet with our ruling thug, Bashar Al-Assad, last Summer,
despite the vehement denials of the Assad Embassy in Washington. Is anyone
really surprised? I hope this proves what we have been asserting all along:
that Assad officials are liars and hypocrites and that nothing they say can be
taking at face value: there are no infiltrators, there are no armed gangs, but
there is an Assad-sponsored killing machine that has been set against the
people.
