A Mixed Bag!

A standstill is always a mixed bag of good news and bad news: Assad loyalists retake some communities only but lose others, push forward only to be pushed back. But the stasis is superficial. In reality, the state structure and infrastructure are imploding. The Ancien Régime is coming apart at the seams, but at a very high cost. Building a new one, a democratic one, will be the toughest challenge yet. Even though victory might still be a while in coming and is not necessarily assured, it’s not too early at all to begin articulating what the new regime will be like, beyond the usual generalities.

Wednesday 01, 2012

Today’s death toll: 40. The Breakdown: 23 in Rural Damascus, 11 in Homs, 4 in Deraa, and 1 in each of Hama and Idlib.

Loyalist troops managed to reestablish their presence in the suburbs of Arbeen and Zamalka in Eastern Ghoutah. To the west of Damascus, loyalist troops pounded the towns of Bseemah and Deir Qanoun, while to the North the pounding of the town of Rankous continued.

But the town of Rastan in Homs Province seems to have fallen completely under the control of rebels affiliated with the Free Syrian Army.

Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that 11 more of its citizens were kidnapped in Syria when their bus was attacked on the road to Damascus, bringing the total of kidnapped Iranians to 16. Iranian authorities said the 11 were on a religious pilgrimage.

An updated version of the op-ed I recently co-authored with Ken Ballen. Main Point: “If Russia exercises its veto at the Security Council on Thursday, the United States should call for an international conference on Syria, with the Arab League, the Islamic Conference, NATO, Japan, India, Brazil and all concerned states. This would be a viable path to legitimate multilateral action while circumventing the Russian veto. In fact, the United States should make clear to Russia immediately that in the event of a Russian veto, it will convene an international conference, so that any Russian veto will be a hollow gesture.”

  1. Do you agree with me that Syria will be a divided
state? I have the same opinion in the Libya issue.
They say they will reunite as one country, but they
can never beat or torture people to take off their
Gaddafi believes. The same will happen in Syria.
The Assad family will always have their supporters.
About Syria..(and other tyrant countries)the problem
is when the rulers thinks they own the country. Like
a company. They think they can do whatever they want.
Because no one has the right or dares to be against
the ruler. But Syria will be free one day. It is only
a matter of time. But how much will it cost? In Libya
it costed over 50000 killed people. And the killing
continues. How much will Syria pay?

  2. Mister Abdulhamid. What do You think about algerian scenario for Syria. Because many russian analysts claim that, regime of Assad try to corner FSA and make the transition FSA to terror tactics. And this is algerian scenario, when regime can crush opposition. What do you think abot it. Personally I think transition to algerian scenario is impossible, as peaceful protest movement. Thank You.

  3. All scenarios are possible in Syria: a failed state, a divided state, and even a democratic state :) I believe we should push for what we believe in and stick to it while continuously reviewing our theories and methods as we go along. This is a struggle for freedom, not a laboratory experiment meant to prove the veracity of certain theories and methodologies, and there are no guarantees of success regardless of one's choice of methods: the peaceful route, the violent or a combination of both, which is what we are witnessing in Syria at this stage. At the same time, while the tactics of repression are dictated from the top, the dynamics of the Syrian revolution are not, they are emerging from the bottom, reflecting the nature of grassroots realities as they exist at each given moment. Traditional opposition figures would have been more able to shape these realities and the response to them more effectively had they managed to win the respect of the people. Unfortunately, after 11 months, we have to conceded that no such figure currently exists. So, the best we can do at this stage is mitigate the consequences, and try to empower leaders inside the country in the hope that they can play that role themselves down the road, hoping that and trying to keep time on our side.

I don't know how many people will have to die to achieve freedom. But had freedom been cheap, we would have never had slavery, and had justice been easy, we would have never had oppression.

  4. Thank You, mister Abdulhamid for answer. We hope, that oust of Assad will cost less.
