News
Asked about relations between the new coalition and the SNC, Ammar al-Qurabi, leader of the National Movement for Change, told AFP his "coalition was not set up in opposition to anyone, other than Assad's regime, but rather to unite the opposition outside the SNC."
Op-Eds & Special Reports

This report is the result of a 4-day workshop in Copenhagen that took place in late February and which I have taking part in organizing. The goal was to encourage a serious discussion on some of the transition challenges facing the leaders of the Syrian Popular Resistance Network. The report is currently being translated to Arabic and will be shared with all protest leaders inside the country for their feedback and made available to the wider public through social media websites. The report comes as a series of recommendations meant to generate public debate on the future of Syria, especially during the transition period which, in many ways, is already unfolding. The debate will hopefully produce a vision for a future Syria in which all major stakeholders, in-country, in the region, and across the world, will have contributed.

The recent revelation that Assad’s term of endearment is “Battah” or “Duck,” as well as his apparent intimate relationship with his advisor, Hadeel Ali, became the subject of much humor in the ranks of protesters who used them to enrich their Facebook statuses as well as the banners they carried in their rallies. The inhabitants of the town Zabadani, near Damascus, carried a number of banners mocking Mr. Duck, including “You know, Mr. Duck, we got used to your explosions” http://youtu.be/eaTdmKmOnMM

As another sign of continued troubles for the Assad, the town of Salamiyah, Hama Province, a mixed community of Sunnis, Ismailites and Alawites, is once again witnessing major daily anti-Assad rallies http://youtu.be/h64EPXfRVOg

Meanwhile, in Raqqah City, events follow the familiar patterns of rallies turning into funerals mushrooming into larger rallies, as the city, and the province, slips out of Assad’s controls:

In Damascus, and while suspicious explosions take place, members of the resistance, Furqan Brigade, carried out an operation that left a loyalist general dead, and led to confiscating some weapons, laptops and documents that revealed detailed of recent official directives, operations and troop movements of Assad loyalists http://youtu.be/4ZNoCeF1WPY Another self-styled special operations unit was formed in Ma’arrat Al-Nouman led by new defector, Lt. Mahmoud Al-Mansour http://youtu.be/dCblj6icYqc
