Casualties and international befuddlement continues to increase in regard to Syria.

Over 5,000 refugees from Jisr Ashoughour and environs have so far crossed into Turkey with more expected to follow. Assad Death Squads have reportedly shot and killed at least one refugee even after he crossed into Turkish territories. 4 army officers who were among the refugees provided testimony to international media in regard to the storming of the city of Rastan last week. We are not told that more than 700 people have been killed in that operation. Officers also spoke of instances of mass rape, and involvement of snipers from Hezbollah. Meanwhile Turkish authorities threatened to establish a safety zone inside Syria’s borders to host refugees should their numbers exceed 10,000. Towards the evening, Heavy gunfire and explosions have been reported in several Lattakia and Homs neighborhoods, as well as Jisr Ashoughour, among other Idlib communities, and the Damascene suburb of Mouaddamiyyah and Qaboun.

I said it before, but reports provided by defecting soldiers interviewed by international media in Turkey now seem to provide some corroboration to the effect that the official death toll provided by human rights groups falls woefully short indeed of what the reality seems to be. Then again, perhaps it is in everybody’s best interest not to confront this reality, since no one has any idea what to do about it. To intervene or not to intervene, that is the question, and all different sorts of people have been posing it while emphasizing the second part, irrespective of the Toll involved.

In this video, Talib Ibrahim, one of the better known spokesmen for the regime, describes the protesters as “proxies” of Israel and says that killing them is a “religious obligations and a duty.” Bear in mind that army troops and security forces are only allowed to listen to official media while on duty, and they have been on duty continuously since the beginning of the revolution. This does not in any way excuse the cold-blooded mass murders and mass rapes that they have so far committed, but it might explain their zeal in this regard.
